Technology continues to influence how people communicate, work, learn, and solve problems. For Somalia, developing strong digital skills is an important part of building a capable workforce and preparing young people for emerging professional opportunities.
The University College of Technology was established with this purpose in mind.
UCT is a private institution of higher learning based in Hodan, Mogadishu, Somalia. Following a year-long feasibility study conducted by Somali intellectuals and technology professionals, the university formally became operational in January 2015.
A University Founded on Knowledge Sharing
The story of UCT began with Somali computer-science graduates who had continued their education and professional development in Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom.
During their studies and careers, they witnessed the rapid development of the internet, email, digital communication, and modern information technology. They recognised how access to technology education could transform both individual lives and wider communities.
The founders concluded that the knowledge and opportunities they had received should also be made available to students in Somalia. UCT was therefore created to help expand access to technology education and contribute to reducing the country’s digital skills gap.
Technology-Focused Higher Education
UCT provides English-medium education with a strong focus on technology, practical knowledge, and career preparation.
The university currently offers three undergraduate degree programmes:
- Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Networking and Cyber Security
- Bachelor of Science in Animation and Visual Effects
Each programme is designed to provide students with theoretical foundations and practical competencies relevant to today’s technology and digital-content sectors.
